Residential fire, explosion causes $250,000 damage

A residential fire and natural gas explosion at 2017 S. Mill at 11:43 April 26 caused about $250,000 damage, according to the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department spokesman.

The cause of the fire at the unoccupied multi-family residence is undetermined and under investigation, the spokesman stated. The incident was believed to have involved a natural gas explosion, according to the Fire Department spokesman.

There were no injuries in the fire, the spokesman stated. The residence was unoccupied.

Fire crews had arrived at the residence within 4 minutes of the call. They reported heavy damage and structure compromising the north side of the structure, the spokesman said. Debris from the north side of the building had fallen in the parking lot.

A natural gas odor was detected and gas service was shut down, the spokesman said. After a search it was determined no one was in the building.

About $250,000 in damage was sustained to the $500,000 building, according to the spokesman.

Isolated thunderstorms are possible this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorms are expected to overspread the region Friday night and Saturday morning, the weather service said. Rain showers are possible into Sunday morning.

Widespread rainfall averaging around a half-inch to an inch is expected through Sunday, according to the weather service.

Locally, higher amounts are possible in areas of thunderstorms, the weather service said. The severe threat remains low.

Today’s forecast is a high of 64, with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m., according to the weather service. Winds will be 10 to 13 mph from the east northeast and could gust as high as 18 mph.

Tonight, the low will be around 56, and there is a 90 percent chance of showers and storms, according to the weather service.

Saturday, expect a high of 69 with a 50 percent chance of showers and storms, the weather service said. An east southeast wind of 9 to 11 mph will become west southwest in the afternoon.

KCK warehouse fire causes $150,000 damage

A fire at a warehouse at 1400 N. 3rd St. at 1:45 p.m. Thursday, April 28, caused about $150,000 damage, according to a Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department spokesman.

According to the spokesman, the cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation. The fire was on the exterior of the building.

The estimated loss was $100,000 to the property and $50,000 to the content and product, the spokesman stated.

When fire crews arrived within 4 minutes of the call, they saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the exterior of the commercial building, which manufactures polystyrene.

A bulk storage area, along with propane storage racks, were fully consumed by fire, the spokesman stated.

The structure was exposed to heavy fire and heat. Crews were able to enter the building and stop the fire from spreading into the $2.5 million facility, the spokesman stated, and they brought the fire under control in 30 minutes.

There were no injuries, the spokesman said.
