With sunny skies and temperatures reaching about 60 by late morning, the opening day of fishing at Wyandotte County Lake, 91st and Leavenworth Road, attracted many visitors today.

Lonnie Wilson, Kansas City, Kan., said at late morning that he had been at the lake since opening time at 6 a.m. today, but had not caught anything yet. It was pretty cold when the gates opened, he added.

“I like getting out, even if I don’t catch anything,” Wilson remarked.

Wilson did say that some other fishermen earlier caught three or four trout using minnows and casting as far out as they could toward the middle of the lake.

Pete Alejandre and Sheri Stanley were out enjoying the nice weather in late morning. They were trying to catch catfish and were waiting for their first catch.

Michael Mallard of Kansas City, Kan., returned to the lake on opening day, as he does almost every year.

He and an old high school friend were fishing, but hadn’t caught anything yet, he said.

Today’s opening day of the lake included a benefit breakfast sponsored by the Leavenworth Road Association at Davis Hall. The breakfast was from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Opening day of fishing also attracted some boaters today at the lake.

Fishing and boating permits are required; for more information see http://www.wycokck.org/InternetDept.aspx?id=24396&menu_id=1416&banner=15284.
