Sporting KC home opener to be Saturday in KCK

Sporting Kansas City’s home opener will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Children’s Mercy Park (the former Sporting Park), in Kansas City, Kan.

The match will be televised live locally on KMCI-TV 38 the Spot and across the Midwest on SKCTV with coverage starting at 7 p.m. Listeners can also follow the action on Sports Radio 810 WHB (English) and La Grande 1340 AM (Spanish).

There will be pregame festivities beginning at 5 p.m. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 7:15 p.m. for a pregame presentation.

Sporting KC remains undefeated in home openers at Children’s Mercy Park in the five years since the state-of-the-art venue opened, and has lost only two home openers since the club’s debut in 1996. The team also won its 2016 season opener last Sunday night, a 1-0 victory at Seattle Sounders FC. Newcomer and Portuguese center back Nuno André Coelho scored the match-deciding goal from 30 yards out in the 73rd minute with an assist from midfielder Jordi Quintilla.

Members of Sporting KC’s back line also garnered honors following Sunday’s performance, with MLS Team of the Week accolades this week. The club also added to its front line with the addition of Chilean striker Diego Rubio, on loan to Sporting KC as a Young Designated Player.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC opened their 2016 season at home, falling to Montreal Impact 3-2. While the Whitecaps doubled their opponent in shots on goal, they were unable to capitalize and trailed 2-1 at halftime. Montreal scored again in the 88th minute, and Vancouver’s goal in the 93rd minute wasn’t enough to pull them to a tie.

Sporting KC has taken down Vancouver on four occasions in the past, falling to the Canadian opponent only once – and never in Kansas City. Last year, the two teams first went head-to-head in July in Vancouver, where Sporting KC pulled out a 1-0 road win after a header from Kevin Ellis.

The next time the teams met in regular season competition, Vancouver sprung into action early and entered halftime up 2-0. Kevin Ellis provided a glimmer of hope for the home team with a goal shortly after halftime, but a 75th-minute goal from Pedro Morales restored the two-goal lead. But after a header from Dom Dwyer in the 81st minute, a re-energized Sporting KC went on to defeat Vancouver 4-3, with goals in the 87th and 94th minutes from Paulo Nagamura.

KCKCC at home in baseball action Saturday to play No. 4 Cowley

Cowley College lived up to its No. 4 ranking in the NJCAA Division I national baseball poll Thursday with a 5-1, 3-2 sweep of Kansas City Kansas Community College at Arkansas City.

The Blue Devils (14-5), who had a 12-game winning streak snapped, get a chance to avenge those losses Saturday when they host Cowley in a home re-match starting at 1 p.m.

Cowley built up an early 5-0 lead in the 7-inning 5-1opener before Tiger hurlers combined to strike out 18 Blue Devils in the 3-2, 9-inning nightcap.

A two-out, two-run double by Caleb Eldridge in the bottom of the first was the big blow in Cowley’s opening 5-1 win. The blow capped a 3-run first and the Tigers added two more runs in the third on singles by Abdiel Alicea and Bryce Fischer and Eldridge’s second double and third RBI. Carson LaRue scattered eight hits and struck out four for the win.

The Blue Devils’ only run came in the fourth on a walk, a single by Ryan Fisher and an outfield error. Albert Woodard had a double and two singles and Conor Behrens and Malone Smith two singles for the Blue Devils, who managed to put two runners on base in just three innings. Dustin Eby gave up six hits and struck out three in absorbing the loss.

Cowley also built a 3-0 lead in the nightcap and then rode the pitching of Tucker White, who struck out 14 in six innings, and reliever Scott Engler, who fanned four in two innings. The Tigers scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Alicea doubled in the first run in the third; K.K. Daniel doubled and scored on Jacob Means’ two-out single in the fourth; and Steve Thompson tripled in the fifth and scored on a ground ball.

KCKCC’s two runs came in the seventh off Mason McAlister. Malone Smith singled and scored on Drew Holtgrieve’s double. Easton Fortuna’s ground ball scored Holtgrieve, the only Blue Devil with more than one hit. Brandon Reid gave up just six hits in 6.2 innings before Avery Fliger closed with 1.3 inning of one-hit relief.
