The Cathedral of St. Peter, 416 N. 14th St., Kansas City, Kan., will serve as the host church for penance services during Lent for Catholic churches in Wyandotte County. The penance services may be held in conjunction with a Holy Door observance. The remaining penance services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 8; and 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22.

First Christian Church of Bonner Springs, 148 N. Nettleton Ave., will be the host of Bread and Broth during the Lenten season. Lent is a time of reflection between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Bread and Broth is a simple meal of fellowship at 6 p.m. on Wednesday nights with a short service at 6:30 p.m. led by the pastor, Randy Beeman. The fellowship will help persons reflect on the importance of Jesus’ life, ministry, and his resurrection on Easter. This remaining dates for Bread and Broth are March 2, 9 , 16 and 23.

The Greater Kansas City 55th annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, in the grand ballroom of the downtown Kansas City, Mo., Convention Center. The nonprofit beneficiary will be St. James Place operated by the Bishop Sullivan Center. The event speaker will be Mindy Corporon, leader of the “Faith Always Wins Fund” – speaking in memory of her son, Reat, and her father, Dr. Willliam Corporon, who were killed in 2014. Judson Baptist Church, 8300 State Ave., will have an interim pastor preaching at Sunday services through March 13. The 8:30 a.m. service will be suspended during this time. Sunday School will be at 9:45 a.m. and the regular Sunday service will be 11 a.m.

The Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan., is planning a program on “Holy Women, Eileen Egan,” a woman driven to search for peace, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10. Risen Lamb International Church of the Nazarene, located in the Turner area of Kansas City, Kan., has announced the opening of the Risen Lamb Prayer Room and Retreat Center. On location at their church at 5301 Metropolitan Avenue, the prayer room and retreat center is open to the public for daytime retreats. All individuals or small groups seeking a quiet, sacred space to gather, pray, meditate, journal or read resources about prayer are welcome. The prayer room provides a peaceful space for solitude or can be scheduled in advance for groups of up to eight people. Guests seeking spiritual guidance may schedule a time of spiritual direction with one of the pastoral staff, and groups may inquire about scheduling a member of the pastoral team to lead or speak at a retreat. Members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1300 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan., continue to observe the Lenten season. The Stations of the Cross will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 4. Program shows parents how to pay for college
Parents and guardians of seniors in the Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming “Financing College” events. The focus will be on technical schools, two-year and four-year colleges. Five different sessions will be held across the district to provide assistance with the completion of FAFSA applications, college financial aid, and more. Remaining sessions dates and times:

Program offered on simple seasonal meals
“Simple Seasonal Meals,” a program on growing and preparing your own food, will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, at the K-State Research and Extension office of Wyandotte County, 1216 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan. (west of K-mart). The program will discuss fresh fruits and vegetables that you can buy or grow, and it will include recipe selections for the four seasons, as well as tips on purchasing and storing produce. The Master Food Volunteers will present the program. A minimum fee of $5 will be for program materials and samples. Those attending may bring their own lunch, and water will be provided. Pregnancy, infant loss support group to meet

BPU to meet March 2
The Board of Public Utilities will meet Wednesday, March 2 at the BPU offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. On the agenda for the 5 p.m. work session is an update on the Nearman plant air quality control program. The regular session starts at 6 p.m. On the agenda are a visitors’ time, a legislative update, a preliminary January 2016 financial report, board comments and general manager comments.

Master Gardeners sponsor gardening program March 3
The Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners are sponsoring “Colorful Shade Gardening: Beyond Hostas,” from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 3. Rob Mortko, known as “the hosta guy,” and owner of Made in the Shade Gardens in Olathe, Kan., will be sharing his expertise, as he discusses the many options to create balance and diversity in the shady landscape. He’ll cover the different degrees of shade as well as the seemingly endless number of plants which are ideally suited for the shade. Opening day at lake to be March 5
Opening day at Wyandotte County Lake is Saturday, March 5. Gates open for fishing at 6 a.m. This year the Leavenworth Road Association will be serving biscuits and sausage gravy at Davis Hall. Serving will be 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The biscuits and gravy breakfast with sausage, hash browns and drink will be $10 for adults and $5 for children.

The Leavenworth Road Association monthly meeting will be March 8 with Dave Clark, city engineer, as the speaker to discuss possible ideas for the second phase of Leavenworth Road project, 63rd to 78th streets. Also there may be another project along 61st. Leavenworth Road Association will provide the meatloaf for the potluck meal, along with contributions of covered dishes from those attending. Sister Souljah to appear at KCK Library April 16
Kansas City, Kan., Public Library will be the host of bestselling author Sister Souljah as part of the tour for her latest book, “A Moment of Silence: Midnight III.” The event will take place April 16 at the Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. Sister Souljah will discuss her books, writing process, and inspiration. There will be a book signing following the discussion. Activist, educator, hip hop artist, and bestselling author Sister Souljah is best known for her autobiography, “No Disrespect,” and her novel, “The Coldest Winter Ever.” As a community activist, she participated in the anti-apartheid movement, organized rallies against racially motivated crimes, created the African Youth Survival Camp, and worked as the executive director of Daddy’s House Social Programs. She is a graduate of Rutgers University and was also educated at Cornell University and University of Salamanca. Danger of fire today, weather service says

There is an elevated fire weather danger this afternoon, as temperatures warmed to 71 degrees at 2 p.m. in Wyandotte County.

Relative humidity values dropped, and southwest wind picked up today. That along with dry fuels creates a danger of fire, the National Weather Service said.

Residents are asked not to have any open fires outdoors, according to the weather service.

There is a chance for light snow accumulations on Monday night and Tuesday, as a cold front moves in, according to the weather service, with light snow again possible on Thursday.
