What’s closed on Columbus Day?

Unified Government

The Unified Government Annex and Treasurer’s offices are closed on Monday, Columbus Day, Oct. 12.

These two offices will be holding training for office staff and will resume normal hours on Oct. 13, according to a UG announcement.

Two Standing Committee meetings for the UG that had been scheduled Monday night were canceled, according to a note on the UG’s website.

BPU
The Board of Public Utilities office is open until 5 p.m. on Oct. 12.

Trash pickup
Columbus Day is not a holiday for Deffenbaugh trash pickup, which is scheduled as usual.

Federal holiday
Columbus Day, Oct. 12, is a federal holiday. Federal offices are closed.

Postal service and mail
Columbus Day, Oct. 12, also is a holiday for the U.S. Postal Service.

State
Columbus Day is not listed as a state holiday for state employees in Kansas.

Schools
The public schools, K-12, in Wyandotte County are open on Columbus Day, Oct. 12. KCKCC is holding exams today.

Renaissance Festival
The Renaissance Festival is open today, Columbus Day, Oct. 12. It is near 126th and State Avenue in Bonner Springs. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, see www.kcrenfest.com/.

Columbus Day forecast: Dry, cooler and fire hazard conditions

The Columbus Day forecast is dry and cooler, but residents are warned to be cautious if doing any outdoor burning today.

The National Weather Service said conditions conducive to fire growth will be possible today in the region with dry and cool air moving into the area.

Relative humidity values will drop into the 20 to 30 percent range, with northwest winds gusting up to 20 to 30 mph at times, the weather service said. Residents should use extra caution if doing any outdoor burning. Refrain from outdoor burning today if possible.

Skies are sunny today, with a high near 76. The northwest wind will be 7 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph, the weather service said.

Tonight’s forecast is mostly clear with a low of 48, according to the weather service. The west northwest wind will be 5 to 8 mph.

On Tuesday, there will be sunny skies with a high of 73, the weather service said. The west northwest wind will be 5 to 7 mph.

Tuesday night, expect mostly clear skies with a low of 50, according to the weather service.

Wednesday’s forecast will be sunny with a high of 73, the weather service said. Wednesday night, it will be mostly clear with a low of 51.

On Thursday, the high will be near 77 with mostly sunny skies, the weather service said. Thursday night, it will be partly cloudy with a low of 46.

Friday’s forecast is sunny with a high of 62, according to the weather service. Friday night, it will be mostly clear with a low of 41.
