Sweet treats offered at Legends store today

As part of a new Verizon store opening at The Legends, those who donate a used phone will receive a free ice cream cone.

The donated phones will go to help domestic violence victims through Verizon’s HopeLine program. The event is from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. today, July 11.

The ice cream giveaway is part of the store’s grand opening events. Every hour from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, July 11, the shop will give away either a 4G LTE smartphone or a Verizon Wireless gift card. There will be two winners per hour.

During the grand opening of this store, Verizon gave $2,500 to Friends of Yates and $2,500 to El Centro, through its HopeLine Program. The funds will help local organizations that assist domestic violence victims.

On Sunday, July 12, those who try the new interactive store stations at the Verizon store can receive a sweet treat from the Coffee Cake KC parked outside the store from noon to 2 p.m.

The Legends Outlets Verizon Wireless Smart Store opened on Thursday, June 25. The new Verizon Wireless retail store is designed to make shopping for wireless devices and services more convenient and personalized, according to a spokesman. The redesigned stores are called Smart Stores and feature products in mobile lifestyle zones.

The store is at 10621 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan., in The Legends. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays.

5-year-old girl wounded in drive-by shooting

A 5-year-old girl was wounded in a drive-by shooting that happened around 3:30 a.m. Saturday near the 1800 block of Oakland Avenue in Kansas City, Kan.

The girl was inside her home when she was injured, Kansas City, Kan., police believe.

She had been shot in the leg and hip, police said. The injuries are not life-threatening, according to police. She was taken to a hospital.

Tractor Daze planned July 11 at Ag Hall
Tractor Daze and Touch-A-Truck are planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs. The Ag Hall is near 126th and State Avenue. The events include a parade at noon, garden tractor pull at 1 p.m. and kiddie pedal pull at 1 and 2:30 p.m. There will be a Hall of Fame induction at 11 a.m. Admission is $5, with kids 2 and younger, free. Free concert offered July 11 at Legends
The “Live at the Legends” concert series will continue at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at The Legends Outlets, I-70 and I-435, Kansas City, Kan. Performing July 11 will be the Mikey Needleham Band. Future concert dates include July 18: Perpetual Change, 1980s and 1990s rock (with some hits from the 2000s).

La Placita Central Avenue Market open
La Placita Central Avenue Market will be open at 11 a.m. at Bethany Park, North 12th and Central Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. Exhibits, booths and food vendors will be at the event.

Library to hold ‘Zoo to You’ program
The Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Schlagle Environmental Library, at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road, will hold a “Zoo to You” program from 1 to 1:45 p.m. July 11. Zoo educators, animals and artifacts are part of the program.

Strawberry Hill Museum open on weekends
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., is open on the weekends. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The admission charge is $7 for adults, $3 for children 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. Special tours are available during the week for groups of 20 or more by calling 913-721-0081. Bands include Strictly Alice, Almost Kiss, Edge of Forever, and Fire and Ice. It will be a tribute concert to Alice Cooper, Kiss, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Pat Benatar.
