Several offices closed on Memorial Day

Unified Government offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, to observe the Memorial Day holiday, according to a UG announcement.

UG offices will reopen for business at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 26.

BPU

Board of Public Utilities administrative and customer service lobby will be closed for Monday, May 25, Memorial Day, according to an announcement.

Although BPU’s business offices are closed on holidays, emergency service is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. For power emergencies, customers should call 913-573-9522. The water emergency number is 913-573-9622.

Trash pickup

Memorial Day also will have an effect on trash pickup in Kansas City, Kan., according to information from the Unified Government.

Deffenbaugh will be observing Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, as a holiday. It will not pick up residential trash or curbside recycling on May 25 in Kansas City, Kan.

Service for trash pickup and curbside recycling will be moved back one day for Kansas City, Kan., residents on the week of May 25:
Monday’s pickup will be done on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s pickup will be done on Wednesday.
Wednesday’s pickup will be done on Thursday.
Thursday’s pickup will be done on Friday.
Friday’s pickup will be done on Saturday.

Postal service
Monday, May 25, is a postal holiday, according to the U.S. Postal Service.

Federal

Memorial Day, May 25, is a federal holiday.

Kansas
Memorial Day also is a holiday for state of Kansas employees.

For the third straight year, Kansas City Kansas Community College has landed a high school standout from Wichita – Brooklyn Bockover from Bishop Carroll.

A 5-5 point guard, Bockover averaged 2.3 assists per game, 2.8 points and 1.5 rebounds while shooting 46 percent from the floor and 67 percent from the free throw line this past season.

“Brooklyn is a pass first point guard who will give us a different look offensively,” said KCKCC coach Valerie Stambersky. “She can shoot and guard and has a great work ethic.”

Two years ago, KCKCC landed Cassidy Harbert of Wichita Northwest, who finished as the Lady Blue Devils’ all-time leader in assists; and last year recruited Janay Jacobs of Wichita Kapaun-Mount Carmel.

Heavy rains likely over holiday weekend

As the Memorial Day weekend begins, forecasters have their eye on rain predicted throughout the weekend.

Today, there might be a few stray late afternoon or evening showers in the west, the weather service said.

Scattered showers and storms are predicted for Saturday, with no severe storms, according to the weather service.

Several rounds of showers and storms may hit Saturday night and continue into Sunday evening, likely resulting in widespread 1-inch to 2-inch rains, the weather service said.

Renewed flooding problems are possible through the holiday weekend, especially for locations that received heavy rainfall last weekend, according to the weather service.

Today’s high will be near 66 with a slight, 20 percent, chance of showers after noon, the weather service said.
The chance of rain increases to 40 percent tonight.

For Saturday, the high will be near 68, with a 50 percent chance of rain, the weather service said.

Saturday night, the chance of rain is 90 percent. The low will be around 62. Some of the showers and thunderstorms could produce heavy rainfall Saturday night, according to the weather service.

Sunday, there is a 90 percent chance of precipitation with a high near 72, the weather service said.

Sunday night, expect a 60 percent chance of rain with a low of 63, according to the weather service.

Monday, Memorial Day, the forecast is a 30 percent chance of precipitation with a high near 78, according to the weather service. Monday night, the chance of precipitation is 40 percent, with a low of 64, the weather service said.
