Risen Lamb International Church of the Nazarene, located in the Turner area of Kansas City, Kan., has announced the opening of the Risen Lamb Prayer Room and Retreat Center. On location at their church at 5301 Metropolitan Avenue, the prayer room and retreat center is open to the public for daytime retreats. All individuals or small groups seeking a quiet, sacred space to gather, pray, meditate, journal or read resources about prayer are welcome. The prayer room provides a peaceful space for solitude or can be scheduled in advance for groups of up to eight people. Guests seeking spiritual guidance may schedule a time of spiritual direction with one of the pastoral staff, and groups may inquire about scheduling a member of the pastoral team to lead or speak at a retreat. Enjoy good food and fun at the Summer Festival to benefit the charitable works of the Sisters, Servants of Mary from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 7, on the grounds of the Sisters’ Convent, 800 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. Homemade tacos and tamales, Italian sausage and barbecued beef sandwiches, hot dogs, ice cream and Spanish desserts will be served. There will be games for children and booths including dolls from Mexico; various fundraisers; a variety booth; and tote bags and cookbooks for sale. The Sisters, Servants of Mary are a community of women religious who provide nursing care to persons in their homes. The Sisters offer their services at no charge to individuals or families. They are nurses and serve people throughout the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area. A swap and shop is planned from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 6 in the parking lot at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1086 N. 94th St., Kansas City, Kan. There will be a charge to have a space there. The event is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

Trinity Sunday will be observed May 31 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1300 N. 18th St. The service in English will be at 10 a.m. and in Spanish at 7 p.m. There will be a special celebration after the service in Spanish honoring Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Trinity AME Church, 2201 N. 5th St., is planning “Sumner Day” for all those who attended Sumner High School. They will be recognized at the10:15 a.m. service Sunday, June 28. The Sumner class with the most number in attendance will receive a trophy. After the worship service, a reception with light refreshments will be held.

Strawberry Hill Museum open on weekends
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., is open on the weekends. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The admission charge is $7 for adults, $3 for children 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. Special tours are available during the week for groups of 20 or more by calling 913-721-0081. Wyandotte County Museum open
The Wyandotte County Museum, 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays and holidays. Classic car show planned
A Classic Car Cruise is planned from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at 500 Kindleberger Road, Kansas City, Kan. The event will be sponsored by the UAW Local 31.

Special UG meetings planned June 1 and 8
Special sessions of the Unified Government will meet at 4 p.m. Monday, June 1, and Monday, June 8, in the fifth floor conference room, Suite 515, 701 N. 7th St., City Hall, Kansas City, Kan. There will be a meeting of the Committee of the Whole to discuss the capital maintenance improvement plan (CMIP) and Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).
On June 1, two UG standing committee meetings, Neighborhood-Community Development, and Economic Development and Finance, are planned starting at 5 p.m. on the fifth floor.

Free summer movies offered June 2-4
Free family-friendly movies will be offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. at the Legends 14 Theatres in Kansas City, Kan. The free movie on June 2-4 will be “Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit.” The movie is rated G. Doors open at 9 a.m., all ages may attend. Seating is limited to availability on a first-come-first-serve basis. The schedule is subject to change. Current feature films are not included in the free admission.

BPU to meet June 3
The Board of Public Utilities will meet at 5 p.m. June 3 at the BPU officces, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. On the agenda for the work session will be an update from the general manager and board, followed by a closed 45-minute session to discuss litigation. The regular BPU meeting will begin at 6 p.m. June 3. On the agenda for the meeting are a time for visitors to speak; an update from the Wyandotte Economic Development Council; the April financial report and other reports; board comments, general manager comments, and a closed session.

UG to meet June 4
The Unified Government Commission will meet at 7 p.m. June 4 at the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. An agenda is expected to be posted online a few days before the meeting.

Swap meet planned June 4-5 at Kansas Speedway
A swap meet is planned June 4-5 at the Kansas Speedway, I-70 and I-435 in Kansas City, Kan. The event is open to the public. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 4 and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 5. Items such as automotive parts, motorcycles, tools, antiques and other items are expected to be available at the swap meet.

Art exhibit to continue June 5
The Wyandotte Art Association’s group exhibit celebrating 50 years of art in Kansas City, Kan., has been held over and will continue at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 5, at the Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. Women’s Chamber to meet June 10
The Kansas City, Kan., Women’s Chamber of Commerce will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, at the South Branch Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The speaker will be Janie Gaunce, business owner, president and CEO of Grapevine Designs, a national creative promotional marketing company. Networking will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon, followed by the lunch and program from noon to 1 p.m. The cost for lunch is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Guests are welcome. Leavenworth Road Association, Parks and Rec plan fishing derby June 13
The Leavenworth Road Association and the Unified Government Parks and Recreation Department are planning a free kids’ fishing derby June 13 at the Wyandotte County Lake kids fishing pond, 91st and Leavenworth Road. Registration is at 7 a.m. The event is from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Trophy presentation is at 11:30 a.m. There will be free goodies bags, free hot dogs and free bait. The event is for ages 3 to 15. DAR chapter Medal of Honor Remembrance Service rescheduled
The Wyandot Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter’s Medal of Honor Remembrance Service originally planned at 10 a.m. June 13 at the Highland Park Cemetery, 4101 State Ave., will be rescheduled in September, according to an announcement. Three Civil War Medal of Honor recipients will be honored.

Free concert offered June 13 at Legends
The “Live at the Legends” concert series will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at The Legends Outlets, I-70 and I-435, Kansas City, Kan. Big Time Grain Company, a country and country rock band, will perform from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Legends, near the courtyard fountain area in front of the theaters. The concert is free and open to the public. Other concert dates include June 20: Dino O’Dell and The Doo-Dads, children’s music; June 27: The Zeros, new wave 1980s; July 11: Red Guitar, transcendent melodic rock music; and July 18: Perpetual Change, 1980s and 1990s rock (with some hits from the 2000s).

Program planned on dispelling myths of aging

Program to promote better self-image
A program is planned to help women develop a better self-image and more positive attitude. Rosedale Retro Run will be May 30
The Rosedale Retro Run, a 5k-fun run, has been canceled Saturday, May 9. It is being rescheduled for May 30. There also will be a community trail work day and a mountain bike jam. There will be a finish line party at Fisher Park. Race registration will be $20 per person in advance and $25 on the day of the race. Kids may participate for free. Classic car show planned

Friends of Bonner Library to sponsor mini book sale
Friends of the Bonner Library are having a mini book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, in the storm shelter on the bottom level of the library which is located at 201 N. Nettleton in Bonner Springs. For those who attended the last sale there are a great number of new donations, fiction, non-fiction and children’s books. Because of the large selection there will be many specials available – a plastic grocery bag of romance will be $1, paperbacks are offered at 4 for $1 and hardbacks, many of which are like new will be only 50 cents. All money raised benefits the library, the Friends have recently given $800 to the summer reading program and will donate $500 toward an electronic message board which will be installed inside the library.

Learn how to make leather and bead bracelets
A program on making leather and bead bracelets is offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Those attending will make a bracelet from leather and beads. This program is for adults. Teens may attend if they are accompanied by an adult. There is a $6 fee for supplies. Summer reading kickoff party
A summer reading program kickoff party is planned from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the West Wyandotte Library auditorium, 1737 N. 82nd, Kansas City, Kan. Special guests at this party will be firefighters, police officers and other emergency staff. There will be crafts and face painting before a special Mad Science show scheduled at 1 p.m. The program is free and open to the public. Children younger than 9 must be accompanied by an adult.

Church groups hold bake and garage sale
From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 30, the church trustees will hold a garage sale and the United Methodist Women are having a bake sale at Wyandotte United Methodist Church, 7901 Oakland Ave., Kansas City, Kan.
