Traffic changes planned Thursday on U.S. 69

Traffic changes are planned Thursday, April 30, on U.S. 69 bridges over the Missouri River, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The bridges connect Platte County, Mo., with Wyandotte County, Kan. The existing travel lanes north of the U.S. 69 Missouri River bridge will be modified Thursday.

Traffic will be moved to the new crossover pavement and onto the new bridge over the realigned Argosy Casino Parkway in Missouri.

The right-turn entrance into Argosy Casino from northbound U.S. 69 also will be modified this week. Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution, according to MoDOT.

In June, the realigned Argosy Casino Parkway is scheduled to be reopened to traffic. The existing road looping under the Platte Purchase Bridge will be removed from service permanently at that time to make way for the new bridge construction.

Let’s eat outside – safely

by Lori Wuellner
As the weather warms, many people enjoy cooking outside on a grill or packing a picnic to eat on a hike.

But if we don’t pay close attention to safe food handling, we could be putting our family and friends at risk of a foodborne illness.

Foodborne illness increases during the summer because the temperatures are warmer, and the pathogens around us can be transferred to food and grow quickly in the warm temperatures. Summer also tends to be humid, and moist environments increase the chances for bacteria to grow.

Test your food safety savvy:
1. To what temperature should you cook chicken? _________F
2. To what temperature should you cook burgers? _________F
3. How long should you wash your hands with soap and water? ________seconds
4. On a hot day (above 90F), how long can you leave food on the picnic table? ________ hour(s)
Answers: 1) 165 F; 2) 160 F.; 3) 20; 4) 1

Remember these 4 tips to food safety.

1. Clean: Wash hands and surfaces often: When eating away from home, check if the site has a source of “potable” (safe) drinking water. If not, bring water for preparation and cleanup. For picnics away from water sources, pack wet wipes and paper towels to clean hands and surfaces.
2. Separate, don’t cross-contaminate: When you pack a cooler for an outing, be sure raw meats and their juices do not come into contact with ready-to-eat foods or beverage cans. Place meats in tightly sealed storage containers or have a separate cooler for raw meats.
3. Cook to the proper temperature: Meat and poultry cooked on a grill often browns fast on the outside, so be sure the meat is cooked thoroughly. Use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature. If you picked up cooked, hot food at a store or restaurant it should be eaten within 2 hours or purchase.
4. Chill promptly: Keep cold perishable food such as deli meats, chicken, and potato or pasta salad in an insulated cooler packed with several inches of ice, ice packs or containers of frozen water. Keep the cooler in the passenger area of your vehicle (not the trunk) and place in the shade or shelter at the picnic site.

No-hitter highlights KCKCC 4-game sweep

by Alan Hoskins, KCKCC

Highlighted by a no-hit pitching performance, Kansas City Kansas Community College closed out its home baseball season by sweeping a pair of doubleheaders Monday and Tuesday.

The win boosted the Blue Devils’ overall record to 32-23 heading into first round Region VI playoff action Saturday at Butler County (27-27) in El Dorado. A best of three series, two games will be played Saturday starting at 1 p.m. with a third game if necessary Sunday at 1 p.m.

Making his first start of the year, Blue Springs South sophomore Landon Mason pitched a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over Saint Mary JV Monday. Mason walked just one and struck out two in five innings.

Of Mason’s 56 pitches, 38 were strikes as he retired eight hitters on ground balls and five on fly balls. Daniel LaMunyon drove in four runs with a 2-run single in the first and 2-run triple in the fourth while Travis Stroup had two singles and a 2-run triple and Easton Edmond three singles and two RBI.

KCKCC won Monday’s opener over Saint Mary 8-3 behind the 6-hit pitching of Dustin Eby. Edmond led the way with three RBI on a double and single while Eli Lovell also singled and doubled and Stroup singled twice.

The Blue Devils completed the two-day sweep with 10-5 and 14-2 wins over Maple Woods on Tuesday. Trailing 5-4 in the opener, the Blue Devils tied the game in the sixth on the second of two triples by Tyler Raymond, then went ahead on a 2-run double by Alex Thrower and a 2-run single by Tanner Foerschler. Stroup also drove in two runs with two doubles and a single while Thrower and Froeschler each had two hits.

The Blue Devils scored their last 12 runs – three in the third, four in the fourth and five in the fifth – with two out in the 14-2 win over Maple Woods.

“That’s pretty incredible,” said KCKCC coach Steve Burleson. Foerschler drove in six runs with a single, double and triple; Landon Mason hammered a 3-run home run; and Connor Behrens singled three times in a 14-hit attack. Thrower, whose on base percentage is over .500, scored four runs after being hit by pitches four times.
