Three BPU members took oath of office Wednesday

Three Board of Public Utilities members were installed on Wednesday, April 15, at a meeting at the BPU’s administration building.

The three, elected this month, are two incumbents, Robert Milan Sr., 1st District; Jeff Bryant, 3rd District; and new board member Norman Scott, at large, position 3.

They took the oath of office at a ceremony before the evening’s board meeting.

Robert L. Milan Sr. – 1st District

Milan has served on the BPU board for more than 20 years, having been first elected in 1991. In 2007, BPU recognized Milan’s dedication to the utility by naming a new Water Division facility in his honor, the Robert L. Milan Sr. Pump Station and Reservoir.

Milan worked at the U.S. Department of Labor for 32 years, retiring as a federal representative. He is active in the Northeast Optimist Club and NAACP. In 2001, he served as state president of AARP. In 2010, the directors of the Heritage Registry of Who’s Who announced the inclusion of Milan.

He has received many awards including being selected by the Kansas City Globe as one of the 100 most influential people in 1998.

A native of Kansas City, Kan., he owned Milan’s Roller Arena and Bowling establishment for many years. Mr. Milan is a Sumner High School graduate and attended Kansas City Kansas Community College, the University of Kansas extension, Donnelly College, the University of Colorado, Temple University and Pioneer College.

Jeff Bryant – 3rd District

Bryant is the estimator-job cost analyst for Plastic Packaging Technologies in Kansas City, Kan. He has been with the company for more than 30 years serving in a variety of roles.

Bryant is a member of the Armourdale Renewal Association and former member of the KC Chapter of the NAACP. Bryant serves on the Unified Government’s Public Works and Safety Committee; serves on the board of directors for Leadership 2000 and also serves on the Schlagle Site Council.

He is a graduate of Turner High School and attended Donnelly College. He and his wife Crystal raised their three children in the Turner School District. He is a Leadership 2000 Class XX graduate, and represents Plastic Packaging at many KCK Chamber of Commerce activities.

Norman D. Scott – at large – position 3

Scott is a native of Kansas City, Kan., who graduated from Wyandotte High School and attended Kansas City Kansas Community College.

For more than 40 years, Scott worked in the construction industry helping build the infrastructure of the Wyandotte County community. In 2001, he retired as a business agent from the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 101.

Scott is an active chair member of the missions for Wyandotte United Methodist Church, and the Wyandotte County Democrats. He previously served as president of Stony Point Neighborhood Association, and the chair of trustees for Grinter Chapel United Methodist Church. He also serves as a volunteer at Cross-Lines Community Outreach.

Kansas City, Mo., man pleads guilty to driving getaway car in five bank robberies

A Kansas City, Mo., man pleaded guilty Thursday to federal charges of taking part in five bank robberies in Kansas and Missouri, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said.

Dale Williamson, 35, Kansas City, Mo., pleaded guilty to five counts of bank robbery. In his plea, he admitted driving a getaway car in the following bank robberies.

• April 24, 2014, UMB Bank, 6252 Raytown Road, Raytown, Mo.
• May 12, 2014, First Bank of Missouri, 7001 North Oak Trafficway, Gladstone, Mo.
• May 22, 2014, Bank of America, 15811 Metcalf Ave. Overland Park, Kan.
• May 30, 2014, Commerce Bank, 9501 Antioch Road, Overland Park, Kan.
• May 30, 2014, Commerce Bank, 3606 Frederick Ave., St. Joseph, Mo.

Sentencing is set for July 6. Both parties have agreed to recommend a sentence of 4.5 years in federal prison. Grissom commended the FBI and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jabari Wamble for their work on the case.

Time-Warner to hire 20 new employees

Time Warner Cable is looking to hire more than 20 employees for full-time direct sales positions in the Kansas City, Mo., market.

“Time Warner Cable’s decision to expand is a win-win for Kansas City,” said Missouri State Rep. T.J. Berry, R-Kearney, Mo. “This announcement means new products and services for our residents, providing a boost to our local economy and most importantly, jobs for individuals looking for a career.”

“We are looking to grow our direct sales workforce in the Kansas City market to meet our customers’ needs,” said Steve Parker, director of direct sales at Time Warner Cable. “These positions have considerable earning potential, great benefits and opportunities for career growth.”

Company representatives will be on hand to interview qualified candidates for sales positions from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Kansas City, 10100 College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kan. Time Warner Cable will not be available to meet with applicants who arrive at different dates or times than specified, a spokesman said.

Direct sales representatives will be responsible for door-to-door cable, internet, phone and security/home management sales to new customers. This will include contractual sales, collecting money, and installation of equipment as needed.

Representatives must be willing to travel and interact with customers on a face-to-face basis.
