Lottery approves three contracts for southeast Kansas casino

The Kansas Lottery Commission has approved contracts with three applicants to be a potential casino manager in the southeast Kansas gaming zone.

The contracts are expected to be signed by Terry Presta, lottery executive director, and forwarded April 30 to the Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board, according to a lottery spokesman.

The seven-member Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board will then have up to 60 days to select the apparent successful candidate or send the contracts back to the lottery for further negotiations.

The lottery applicants met several requirements, including local endorsement, having access to enough financial resources to support the lottery gaming facility manager, and having no less than three consecutive years of experience in Class III gaming.

Each applicant will pay the state a $5.5 million privilege fee.

Applicants who were approved:
– Kansas Crossing Casino and Hotel, applicant, Kansas Crossing Casino LC, proposed in Pittsburg, Kan., at the Junction of Highway 400 and Highway 69;
– Camptown Casino, Frontenac Development, LLC, primary members, Camptown, LLC (Phillip G. Ruffin, director), located at Frontenac, Former Camptown Greyhound Park;
– Castle Rock Casino Resort, Castle Rock Casino Resort LLC, with several members including Air Capital Gaming, Murfin, Inc., Crystal River Investments, LLC, Joplin Holdings, LLC and others, located at Cherokee County, north of I-44 on U.S. Highway 400.

Blue Devil All-Star game to match area’s best seniors on Sunday

The best senior high school players from Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties will square off against the best from Johnson County in the first Blue Devil All-Star basketball game at Kansas City Kansas Community College Sunday at 4 p.m.

Rodney Briggs of Lansing High School will coach the Wyandotte-Leavenworth stars while Rick Zych of Bishop Miege will coach the Johnson County stars. Admission is $5 for anyone 5 years or older. The rosters of the two teams:

Wyandotte-Leavenworth – 6-1 Anthony Cerda aznd 6-7 Larry Gatlin, both of Bishop Ward; 6-6 Trevor Young and 6-5 Kenneth Banks of Lansing; 6-3 Vince Eskina, Piper; 6-3 Jerome Simmons of Leavenworth; 6-6 Carson Fliger, Basehor-Linwood; 6-1 Deionta Nunnaly, Wyandotte; 6-9 Donald Metoyer, Washington; and 6-2 Justin Garner, Harmon.

Johnson – 6-3 Jayden Davis and 6-3 Taylor Filbert, Olathe South; 6-0 Jaymond Kelly and 6-2 Devin Anctil, Olathe Northwest; 6-5 Brian Harness, Shawnee Mission South; E.R. Weather update: Storm system slows down

The National Weather Service said that the storm system moving into the region has slowed down and is not expected to move into the local area until late this evening and overnight.

This has shifted the highest threat for strong to severe storms westward, according to the weather service.

Wyandotte County is in a marginal risk area.

Weakening thunderstorms moving in from the west will spread into these areas between 6 p.m. and midnight, the weather service said. The main threats will be large hail 1 inch or greater and locally damaging winds to 60 mph. They may be scattered only.

Locally heavy rainfall and minor flooding is also possible especially north of I-70, according to the weather service.

Storms will continue to weaken when they reach these marginal risk areas between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. There could be isolated instances of hail near 1 inch or winds of 55 to 60 mph, but the overall severe threat is low, the weather service said.
