Day of fun, games and fitness for KCKPS students

Third-grade students in the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools are gearing up to participate in the 25th Annual Kansas Kids’ Fitness and Safety Day.

The Governor’s Council on Fitness and Safe Kids Kansas are sponsoring this statewide event to reinforce the fun and health benefits of noncompetitive physical activities and injury prevention.

In KCKPS, the event is being held over a two-day period to accommodate all third-graders.

Approximately 900 3rd graders will attend the event on Thursday, April 30, at the Washington High School stadium.

On Friday, May 1, an additional 900 3rd graders will participate at the Harmon High School stadium. Events on both dates will take place from 10 a.m. to noon.

Activities will include tug of war, parachute, team relay puzzles, a soccer kick, stop-drop-and-roll activity, jump rope and Hippity Hop races, among others. Firefighters from local KCK fire stations will be on hand to help with a fire safety station. There will be a pumper truck and ambulance for students to tour.

Kansas Kids Fitness and Safety Day is an opportunity to impress upon youth the importance of being safe and physically active. It is a statewide event held every year on the first Friday in May.

This event focuses on increasing physical activity and safety awareness among third-grade students in Kansas.

Nearly 18,000 students participate each year at more than 40 sites across the state. This is the seventh year that KCKPS students have taken part in the event.
