Money Smart Month event coming to KCK on Saturday

A Money Smart Month activity is coming to Kansas City, Kan., on Saturday, March 28, at the Reardon Convention Center, 500 Minnesota Ave.

The opening event of Money Smart Month is a free “Grow Your Money” event with keynote speaker, John Hope Bryant, founder, chairman and CEO of Operation Hope.

Bryant also serves on President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans. Bryant is participating in the event as part of his national 150th Anniversary Freedman’s Bank Tour. He will discuss the story leading up to and about Freedman’s Bank and how it can inspire people and small businesses to fulfill their freedom of self-determination.

The entire family is welcome to attend this free event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and there will be activities for all, a spokesman said.

There will be on-site financial experts, a panel of local business owners sharing their tips for success, support youth through the Shark Tank Youth contest, and other family-friendly activities.

Money Smart Month of Greater Kansas City is a community initiative led in part by The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Commerce Bank and CommunityAmerica Credit Union.

More than 40 organizations including, banks, credit unions, and professional financial and social service organizations are participating in Money Smart Month, a financial education program, by holding free events, seminars and classes all focused on financial literacy.

These events will provide useful information to consumers of all ages on topics such as savings tips, credit and debt management, budgeting, financial planning, tips to maximize insurance and health benefits, financial tips for small businesses and more. In addition, Spanish-language financial education classes will be offered.

There are other events planned throughout April for Money Smart Month in Greater Kansas City. These include:

Money Smart Day will be on Saturday, April 11, a free event at the Kansas City, Mo., Public Library at 14 W. 10th St, sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. It will offer a dozen financial education sessions from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be free “financial tune-ups,” free credit reports, a youth center and resources.

A Youth Outreach will take place April 28-30 in Kansas City area classrooms. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City is organizing the “Teach Children to Save” program that will be offered to 8,500 children in 350 Kansas City area classrooms. They will learn about saving, and volunteers will work with Junior Achievement to teach its personal finance curriculum to students of all ages.

BPU Ethics Commission seeks applicants

The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Public Utilities is still seeking letters of interest and resumes from persons interested in filling a vacancy on the BPU Ethics Commission.

The purpose of the Ethics Commission is to ensure proper implementation of BPU’s code of ethics and to review and report on all violations of the ethics policy, according to a spokesman. The commission meets to deliberate ethical issues and renders advisory opinions concerning questions of ethics, conflicts of interest, and the applicability of BPU’s Ethics Policy.

The commission is made up of five members. The BPU Board of Directors desires that the Ethics Commission represent the diverse population of the community, a spokesman said. The commission must fill one vacancy.

Applicants must live in Wyandotte County. They must be of good moral standing and cannot have been convicted of a felony or serious crimes. All commission members must comply with BPU Ethics Policy, the spokesman said.

The deadline for submitting letters of interest and resumes is April 30.

Want to play soccer for Sporting KC? Open tryouts in June

Sporting KC will hold the team’s 2015 open tryouts on June 13-14 at Swope Soccer Village, 6310 Lewis Road, in Kansas City, Mo.

According to the club, online registration is now open and will be available to the first 200 players who are 18 years or older.

The club first organized open tryouts in the buildup to the team’s inaugural season in 1996. More recently, Sporting KC has welcomed prospective professionals each year since 2008 when two players, Nelson Pizarro and Kevin Souter, were signed by manager Peter Vermes and went on to appear in 14 matches across all competitions.

Participants must pay all expenses including registration fee and travel costs, but discounted hotel rooms are available for out-of-town players.
