Kansas attorney general appeals school finance decision to Kansas Supreme Court

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt today filed the state’s formal appeal with the Kansas Supreme Court in the school finance litigation.

The Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools district and Turner Public Schools district are among the school districts in Schools for Fair Funding.

The attorney general previously had said he would appeal this decision. The attorney general released a statement today:

“Today, our office has filed with the Kansas Supreme Court the formal paperwork to docket the State’s appeal of the three-judge panel’s December 30, 2014, school finance ruling. This completes the formal legal request for the Supreme Court to review the panel’s decision, which we think is legally flawed and inconsistent with the Supreme Court’s prior instruction. We will brief our arguments more fully in the course of the appeal.”

‘My Shelf to Yours’ book sale to assist KCKCC students

Looking for some great deals on used books, while helping students in financial need? Then Kansas City Kansas Community College’s upcoming My Shelf To Yours Book Sale is the place to be.

The book sale is returning to KCKCC next month, raising funds for students on campus.

The sale is from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 3 and 5 in Room 2325 on the lower level of the Jewell Building on the KCKCC campus, 7250 State Ave. It will also be open 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 4. The sale is open to the public as well as students, staff and faculty.

All books will be $1 or seven books for $5. Proceeds will be placed into a student scholarship fund for textbooks and tuition for those in financial need.

In addition, there will also be beverages and snacks for sale as well as fashion jewelry and other local vendors. Those who attend the book sale and purchase at least $5 worth of items will be automatically entered into a raffle for a KCKCC Bookstore Certificate.

“We really look forward to the My Shelf to Yours used book sale each semester,” said Brian Patrick, director of cultural outreach at KCKCC. “Not only are we able to help students afford their textbooks, but we also are able to promote reading and literacy. So many people are excited to get books of their own. Parents in particular are excited to be able to afford books for their children. It is heartwarming to see so many get excited about books.”

My Shelf To Yours at KCKCC was created in 2010 as a way to promote scholarship, leadership, entrepreneurship and sustainability by selling donated used books both on-line and on-ground. The student-operated store has gained national recognition from eBay’s Green Team for recycling books to help fellow students who need assistance with purchasing textbooks and with college tuition. Since the event started almost five years ago, more than 51,000 books have been donated from 258 individuals. This has helped 252 students with 691 textbooks and has awarded more than $10,000 in scholarships.

Any unsold book donations from the sale will be donated to local charities and organizations, according to the event sponsors.
