Fire on Shawnee Avenue suspected of being electrical

A fire at a home at 1129 Shawnee Ave. is under investigation as electrical, according to a Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department spokesman.

The fire occurred at 8:33 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13.

All the residents got out of the home after neighbors told them their house was on fire, according to the spokesman.

Three adults and four children, girls ages 13 and 4, and boys ages 11 and 9, lived at the home, according to the spokesman. The Red Cross was called to assist the family, the spokesman said.

When they arrived, three minutes after the call, fire crews saw heavy smoke coming from the attic of the one-story wood-framed residential building, the spokesman said.

The pre-fire value of the home was $70,000, and the estimated damage to the structure and contents was $78,000, according to the Fire Department.

There were no injuries, the spokesman said.

There were no smoke or fire detectors present, the Fire Department stated.

Fairfax bridge demolition set for Friday

The demolition of Fairfax bridge end trusses is tentatively scheduled to occur at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, according to Missouri Department of Transportation officials.

Two blast events are tentatively scheduled, including the first on Friday.

Because of variable weather conditions, the demolition may be delayed or rescheduled, according to the highway officials. Larger river trusses of the Fairfax bridge will be demolished at a later date.

A public viewing area has been designated at E.H. Young Riverfront Park, 1001 Argosy Parkway, Riverside, Mo.

The adjacent Platte Purchase Bridge will be closed to traffic from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on days when demolition is scheduled, including Jan. 16.
