Wyandotte County Museum features World War I exhibit

The Wyandotte County Historical Society and Museum, 635 N. 126th, Bonner Springs, Kan., will feature a historical exhibit about the local effect of World War I, “Local Poppies: Centennial of World War I.” The exhibit will include information Wyandotte County service members, war memorabilia, propaganda posters and local memorials from Wyandotte County. Project Feederwatch continues
Project Feederwatch continues at the Schlagle Environmental Library at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road. The bird count is planned each Saturday when people sign up in advance. For more information, call 913-299-2384.

Support group for caregivers offered
A support group for caregivers is offered from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays at Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave. Kansas City, Kan. The facilitator is Jackie Tigges, MSW, LSCSW. Support group for those with addictions offered

Eagle Days planned at Kaw Point
Eagle Days, an opportunity to watch bald eagles, will be Jan. 30 to Jan. 31 at the Lewis and Clark Historic Park at Kaw Point, 1 River City Drive. Benefit spaghetti dinner planned on Super Bowl Sunday
A spaghetti dinner to benefit the Sisters, Servants of Mary, is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb.1, at St. Patrick Parish Center, 94th and State Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. Donations are $8 for adults and $3 for children. The meal will include Italian sausage and spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and beverage. Carryout meals are available for Super Bowl Sunday. The event will also feature a variety booth. The Sisters, Servants of Mary, are a group of women religious with a nursing ministry. They provide in-home nursing care, free of charge, throughout the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area for persons who are critically ill or dying. They live solely off the donations of their friends and benefactors and fund-raising efforts like the spaghetti dinner. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. BPU to meet Feb. 4
The Board of Public Utilities will meet for a work session at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the board offices, 540 Minnesota Ave. That meeting will be followed by the regular session at 6 p.m. The work session agenda includes a general manager update and board update, and a clean power presentation. At the regular session, on the agenda are a visitors time, LISC update, gas supply report, board comments, general manager comments, and a closed session.

Wyandotte County Conservation District to hold annual meeting Feb. 5
The Wyandotte County Conservation District will hold its annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at Edwardsville Community Center, 696 S. 3rd St., Edwardsville, Kan. On the meeting’s agenda are a full report of the district supervisors of their activities and financial affairs since the last meeting, and an election of two supervisors. An election by secret ballot of qualified electors is planned at the meeting to serve for a three-year term. The terms of Kris Blevins and David Hackathorn are expiring. UG Commission to meet Feb. 5 including diversity meeting
The Unified Government Commission is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 at City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., lobby level, Kansas City, Kan. An agenda for the meeting may be posted a few days in advance of the meeting at www.wycokck.org. The meeting is expected to include a time for public comments on the Kansas City, Kan., diversity plan for public safety employees.

Free basketball camp planned Feb. 7
A free basketball camp is planned from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Bethany Recreation Center, 1120 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The free Jr. NBA camp is sponsored by Sumner Academy and the Kansas City, Kan., Parks and Recreation Department. It is for boys and girls in second through seventh grades. Black History Banquet to be Feb. 7
The guest speaker at this year’s Black History Banquet will be Reginald Robinson, professor and director of the School of Public Affairs and Administration at the University of Kansas. The 23rd annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Reardon Convention Center, 500 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Leavenworth Road Association to meet Feb. 10, with mayor as guest speaker
Mayor Mark Holland will be the guest speaker at the Leavenworth Road Association meeting Feb. 10. The Leavenworth Road Association will meet for a pot luck dinner and social hour at 6 p.m. Feb. 10, followed by a program at 7 p.m., at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd. The LRA will provide baked spaghetti, while those attending will bring a side dish.

Women’s Chamber to meet Feb. 11
The Kansas City, Kan., Women’s Chamber of Commerce will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Dave and Busters, Village West at The Legends Outlets, Kansas City, Kan. Kindle to speak at FIA meeting Feb. 12
The guest speaker for the Fairfax Industrial Association meeting Feb. 12 will be Greg Kindle, Kansas City, Kan., Area Chamber of Commerce president and Wyandotte Economic Development Council president. State commissioner of education to attend listening tour here Feb. 18
The incoming state commissioner of education, Randy Watson, will hold a listening tour throughout Kansas, including one from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 18 at the Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools Central Office, Room 131-132, at 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan. The community will have an opportunity to participate in an open conversation about the future of education in Kansas.

School plans chili supper, silent auction Feb. 20
Open Door Christian School, 3033 N. 103rd Terrace, plans a chili supper and silent auction on Feb. 20. The event will raise funds that will be used for the computer technology and training program, and for a shade structure for the playground.

Dinner, auction planned Feb. 27 to raise funds for school
Christ the King Catholic School, Kansas City, Kan., is planning its 12th annual auction and dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the George Meyn Community Center, Wyandotte County Park, 126th and State Avenue. Keeler Women’s Center, a ministry of the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan., offers individual and couples counseling to women and men who might otherwise not be able to afford counseling. Rain today, snow possible Sunday

The National Weather Service predicts rain today and possibly snow Sunday in Wyandotte County.

The temperature was 40 degrees at 1 p.m. Saturday, which will be near the top temperature of the day, according to the weather service.

Between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of rain is possible Saturday.

After midnight, Wyandotte County could get a mixture of rain and snow, according to the weather service. The overnight low will be 34. The weather service said that temperatures will be very close to freezing, and a very small difference in temperatures could mean the difference between several inches of snow and little to no snowfall.

Temperatures will fall to about 21 degrees by 5 p.m. on Sunday, according to the weather service. There will be a 50 percent chance of snow. According to the weather service, there might be less than an inch of snow on Sunday in the Kansas City area, with higher accumulations north of the Kansas City area.

Winds on Sunday could be 5 to 10 mph in the morning, increasing to 19 to 24 mph in the afternoon and gusting as high as 33 mph, the weather service said.

Sunday night, it will be cloudy, with a low around 10, according to the forecast. The wind chill values will be between minus 1 and 4. North northwest winds will be 16 to 21 mph, gusting to 29 mph, decreasing to 9 to 14 mph after midnight, the weather service said.

Monday’s forecast is mostly sunny with a high near 29, according to the weather service. Winds will change from north northwest from 6 to 8 mph to south southeast. Monday night, the low will be around 24.

Tuesday, temperatures are back up to nearly 47 degrees with mostly sunny skies, the weather service said. Wednesday’s high will be near 33.

Enroll Wyandotte signing up people for health insurance
Staff from the Community Health Council of Wyandotte County will help with open enrollment for health insurance from 1 to 5 p.m. Jan. 31 at the South Branch Library, Study Room 2, Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, 3401 Strong Ave. Assistance in Burmese may be available during part of the time, and assistance in Spanish is planned in the afternoon.
Enroll Wyandotte also is assisting with signups and questions about health insurance from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the West Wyandotte Library, auditorium, 1737 N. 82nd.
