Kansas City Kansas Community College’s women will take a 12-1 record and No. 11 national ranking into the 2014 holiday break.

Win No. 12 came Thursday as the Lady Blue Devils rolled to a 77-49 win over Avila University junior varsity.

It was the fifth win in a row for KCKCC, whose only loss was at Hutchinson, the No. 2 ranked team in Division I.

“We did some good things but you can tell its finals week,” said KCKCC coach Valerie Stambersky. “We’ll give the players off until Dec. 27 and then everything gets real.”

The Blue Devils return to action Saturday, Jan. 3, when they are host to Jayhawk Conference rival Brown Mackie and a week later are home to perennial conference power Cowley College.

Cierra Gaines led the Blue Devils past Avila, scoring 18 points while Cassidy Harbert added 11 points, Erin Anderson 10, Cheyenne North 8, Rashaun Casey 7 and Janai Mitchell and Julia Garrard 6 each.

Mitchell led KCKCC to a 38-34 rebound advantage with six while North added five.

Defensively, the Blue Devils limited Avila to 31.9 percent shooting and forced 23 turnovers.

Forecast calls for mild weather today, drizzle tonight

The weather forecast from the National Weather Service says that Wyandotte County will have mild weather, with a high of 50 degrees, and cloudy skies today.

Despite the thick cloud cover, patchy drizzle and fog, temperatures will climb into the 40s to lower 50s today.

There is a chance of drizzle and patchy fog tonight, with a low of 45.

The rest of the weekend will include temperatures in the 50s and 60s, drizzle and fog, just ahead of a storm system and rain moving in on Sunday night, the weather service said.

Saturday starts with a chance of drizzle and patchy fog before noon. The temperature may climb to 56. Saturday night, there is also a chance of drizzle and patchy fog, with a low around 51.

Sunday, there will be a chance of drizzle and patchy fog before 9 a.m. The high will be near 60. Sunday night, rain is likely, with a low around 49.

Widespread light to moderate rainfall is predicted for late Sunday, spreading over the region. Lighter rain is likely during the day on Monday. Precipitation from this storm system should be from a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain.

As cold air plunges in behind the system, there may be a window where wintry precipitation occurs. Any accumulation would be very minor, possibly around Monday night. The chance of precipitation is 30 percent and the low is expected to be 31 degrees Monday night.

The temperature drops on Tuesday to a high of 38.

Cooler weather will prevail through the remainder of the week with a brief warmup Thursday ahead of the next southern stream storm system. It looks like there is little or no chance of accumulating snowfall through the end of next week.
