Candidate forum canceled Monday

A candidate forum originally planned for 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, has been canceled, according to forum officials.

The forum was canceled because of an American League Championship Series baseball game at the same time involving the Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles, according to officials.

The forum was sponsored by the Kansas City, Kan., Area Chamber of Commerce and other organizations.

U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, Republican, visited Turner Days on Sunday, Oct. 12, and talked with voters as part of his campaign through the area.

“Go Turner Bears! Go Kansas City Royals!” he said as he walked through the Turner Days celebration. At one point he tossed a disc with a youngster.

“I’m pretty confident,” Sen. Roberts said about the campaign. “In these last two weeks, I think we’ve turned it around.”

He said if Republicans take over the majority party in the Senate, he would like to be part of it. Currently, Democrats are in the majority in the Senate. If Republicans win the majority, Sen. Roberts has a chance to be named the head of the Senate Agriculture Committee. He is currently a senior member of that committee. He also serves on the Senate Finance Committee, and said he is in favor of lower taxes.

Sen. Roberts, the incumbent, faces a challenge from independent candidate Greg Orman and Libertarian candidate Randall Batson in the general election.

Sen. Roberts maintained that Orman, who is running without a party affiliation, is a “liberal Democrat.”
