Several accidents reported on rain-slickened highways

An accident was reported at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in rainy weather on westbound I-70 near the Turner Diagonal in Kansas City, Kan.

A 23-year-old Kansas City, Mo., driver lost control of a Ford sedan and hit the barrier wall, according to a trooper’s report from the Kansas Turnpike Authority. The driver was injured and taken to a hospital.

Other accidents reported on Wednesday in the area included:

I-635 south of Gibbs Road

An injury-accident was reported on northbound I-635 just south of Gibbs Road at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday. The driver lost control on the rain-soaked roadway, crossed all lanes of traffic and struck the concrete barrier wall, according to a trooper’s report from the Kansas Highway Patrol. The vehicle rolled multiple times before coming to rest on the shoulder.

A 46-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man driving a Ford Ranger was injured and taken to the hospital, according to the report.

I-635 north of Shawnee Drive

Another accident was reported on I-635 northbound just north of Shawnee Drive at 10:45 a.m. Oct. 1.

A Chevrolet Equinox was northbound on I-635 in the right lane and a Toyota Rav4 was in the left lane, according to the trooper’s report.

The Equinox hydroplaned and slid sideways out of control. It veered to the left and was struck by the Toyota, the trooper’s report stated. The Equinox came to rest in the ditch on the right side of the highway, and the Toyota came to rest on the left shoulder.

The driver of the Equinox, a 28-year-old woman from Arnold, Mo., was injured and taken to the hospital, according to the report. The driver of the Toyota, a 36-year-old woman from Olathe, Kan., also was injured and taken to a hospital.

I-670 westbound at I-70

Another accident was reported at 9:18 p.m. Oct. 1 on I-670 westbound at the I-70 merge in Kansas City, Kan.

A Volvo semi was westbound on I-670 and lost control, striking the inside barrier wall, according to a trooper’s report. It was pulling a semi trailer.

The driver, a 37-year-old man from Port St. Lucie, Fla., was injured and taken to the hospital, according to the report.

I-35 and I-635

A 22-year-old woman from Kansas City, Kan., was injured in an accident at 7:05 a.m. Oct. 1 on I-35 southbound, just south of I-635 in Merriam, Kan.

According to the trooper’s report, she was driving a Toyota 4Runner that was southbound on I-35 in lane 3, when it made contact with the passenger side of a Ford Econoline van in lane 2.

The driver of the Toyota veered to the right, then overcorrected to the left in the path of the Econoline van, the trooper’s report stated. The Econoline struck the Toyota in the driver’s door and pushed it to the left shoulder, and both vehicles hit the barrier wall, the report stated.

The driver of the Toyota was injured and taken to a hospital. The driver of the Econoline, a 44-year-old man from Princeton, Kan., also was injured and taken to a hospital, according to the report.
