Big Red One deployed to Iraq

The soldiers in the Big Red One, the 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, have been deployed to Iraq to coordinate U.S. military activities as America targets the Islamic State.

The division has its headquarters at Fort Riley, Kan. About 500 soldiers from the Big Red One have been deployed.

“Once again the soldiers of ‘The Big Red One’ – the ‘fighting first’ – answer the call of our nation,” said Gov. Sam Brownback.

“I ask every Kansan to offer their prayers and support to these soldiers and their families,” he said. “Each one of us owes a debt of gratitude to the brave men and women of the ‘fighting first’ who once again find themselves at the forefront of efforts to protect our country.”

BPU to meet Oct. 1

The Board of Public Utilities will meet for a work session at 5 p.m. Oct. 1 at 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

On the agenda is a general manager update and board update, and a report on fuel and purchase power.

The regular meeting will begin at 6 p.m. On the agenda is a visitors’ time, the August financial report, board comments, general manager comments and a closed session.

KCK driver falls asleep on turnpike, hits semi

A Kansas City, Kan., driver was westbound on I-70 at 12:50 a.m. Sept. 29 when he fell asleep and struck the rear of a semi, according to a trooper’s report from the Kansas Turnpike Authority.

The 23-year-old from Kansas City, Kan., was injured and taken to a hospital. He had been driving a Chevrolet pickup truck.

The driver of the semi, a 56-year-old man from Springfield, Mo., was injured and taken to a hospital.

The accident happened on westbound I-70 between Lawrence and Topeka.
