Athletic field to be dedicated July 12; sports events for youth planned

A punt, pass and kick football event, plus a soccer event, will be held for a community athletic field on Saturday, July 12.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony and youth events will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at 1900 N. 9th St., Kansas City, Kan. It is open to the public. Unified Government Commissioner Tarence Maddox is planning to be at the event.

The field has been restored and will be dedicated in a ceremony July 12. The field is being dedicated to coach Adrion Roberson.

Immediately after the program, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., youth will participate in the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick event. There also will be a soccer match between the Juba Boyz and Somali Soccer of KC.

The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick event is free and open to boys and girls ages 6 to 15. Registration is requested by July 7 to nflppk.com. Youth must pre-register to participate. No walk-ins will be allowed. Participants will be divided into five age groups. Cleats will not be allowed.

Soccer All-Star voting continues on Twitter

On Monday, Major League Soccer released the latest results from fan voting for the 2014 MLS All-Star Game in Portland, Oregon.

Seven Sporting KC players are among the leaders at their positions. Captain Matt Besler is the leading vote getter among defenders, while his centerback partner Aurelien Collin is third and left back Seth Sinovic is sixth. Graham Zusi and Benny Feilhaber are the fourth and sixth-ranked midfielders, and goalkeeper Eric Kronberg ranks third. MLS joint-leading scorer Dom Dwyer is sixth among forwards.

Online voting will continue through July 11. Votes will also be tallied through Twitter starting July 2 and lasting until Sunday, July 6.

An eligible vote consists of the hashtag #MLSAllStar and the player’s full name or twitter handle. Users may only vote for players on the All-Star ballot.

The All-Star Fan XI-one goalkeeper, three defenders, four midfielders and three forwards-will be revealed on July 16.

The 2014 MLS All-Star game is set for Aug. 6 featuring German champions Bayern Munich at Portland’s Providence Park.

Saturday’s forecast has a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms, and a high of 87 is predicted.

Sunday, skies will be mostly sunny and the high will be around 92.
