Free fireworks display planned tonight at Pierson Park

A free fireworks display is planned tonight at Pierson Park, South 55th and Douglas, Kansas City, Kan.

Sponsored by the Turner Recreation Commission and the Unified Government, the free professional fireworks display will begin after dark, expected to start around 9:45 p.m., at Pierson Park.

Those attending may bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. Personal fireworks will not be allowed in the park.

Duncan elected president of district judge association

Judge Daniel Duncan

The Kansas District Judges Association, an organization open to all state district court judges, recently elected officers to serve the organization in the fiscal year that began July 1.

Judge Daniel A. Duncan was elected president of the association. He is a judge in the 29th judicial district, a district that consists of Wyandotte County.

Duncan has been a district court judge since 1989 and he had a private law practice from 1977 to 1989.

He is a member of the American Bar Association’s judicial division, the Kansas Bar Association, and the Wyandotte County Bar Association. He earned his law degree from the University of Kansas.

Also elected to offices:
Judge Michael F. Powers is president-elect. He is a judge in the 8th judicial district, which is made up of Dickinson, Geary, Marion and Morris counties.

Judge Patty Macke Dick was elected secretary. She is a judge in the 27th judicial district, a district that consists of Reno County.

Judge Robert Frederick was elected treasurer. He is judge in the 25th judicial district, which is made up of Finney, Greeley, Hamilton, Kearny, Scott and Wichita counties.

Outgoing president is Judge Thomas Foster, 10th judicial district, a district that consists of Johnson County.

The new officers were elected at a recent statewide conference for judges in Topeka.

Government offices closed for July 4 holiday

Government and many business offices will be closed for Independence Day, July 4.

in Kansas City, Kan., Unified Government and Board of Public Utilities offices will be closed Friday, July 4. They will resume regular business hours on Monday, July 7.

State and federal workers and the U.S. Postal Service also will take a holiday on July 4.

All of the branches of the Kansas City, Kan., Public Library also will be closed July 4.
