Police investigate shooting death near 41st and Waverly

Kansas City, Kan., police are investigating an apparent shooting death in the 4100 block of Waverly Avenue.

Police received a call about the shooting around 9:02 p.m. July 4.

A police spokesman said when officers arrived, they found a man in his early 30s who was deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

The identity of the victim will not be released until there is positive identification and family notification, the spokesman said.

The incident is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department’s major case unit, which is encouraging anyone with information to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

The Evangelical Free Church of America will hold a youth challenge conference from July 6 to 10 in Kansas City, Mo. Nearly 5,500 youth are expected to attend. About 5 percent of the total attendees are expected to be from the Kansas City area. They have scheduled volunteer work while here.

Grandview Christian Church, 8550 Parallel Parkway, is collecting canned goods for Help 3:17, a local food pantry.

“Scripture Study, Bible Sharing and Reflection, Lectio and Journaling,” a regular weekly series facilitated by pastoral minister, Heather Neds, is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesdays at Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The StoreHouse ministry at Stony Point Christian Church is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 16. The StoreHouse serves people with a dinner, clothing and a food pantry.

The Pitching for Priests fundraiser will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 14, at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. Priests and seminarians from the Catholic archdiocese in Kansas City, Kan., and the diocese of Kansas City, Mo., will participate to benefit vocations funding. The host of the event is the Catholic Radio Network.

Members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1300 N. 18th St., will observe the fourth Sunday in Pentecost July 6. Services in English will be at 10 a.m.; services in Spanish will be at 1:30 p.m.

KCK resident has role in ‘Honk’

Joy Richardson of Kansas City, Kan., will play the role of Henrietta in the production of “Honk,” the Ugly Duckling musical, today at Theater in the Park, Shawnee, Kan.

This tale is about overcoming prejudice and finding joy in one’s differences.

Because the opening of “HONK!” coincides with Independence Day, Theatre in the Park is offering special July 4th activities for the entire family to enjoy including large inflatable bouncy house, slide and obstacle course, face painting, balloon artists and free hot dogs and lemonade for the first 500 people through the gates. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the play starts at 8:30 p.m.

The theater is joining with Reach Out and Read for a book drive. Patrons are asked to bring with them to theatre new or gently used children’s books to donate to Reach Out and Read. In thanks for their gesture, TTIP will provide them with a coupon for free popcorn at the show!

The play will open Friday, July 4, and continues July 5, 6, 9, 10, 11 and 12 at the community theater, which is at 7710 Renner Road, in Shawnee, Kan. Midland Drive is the preferred exit to the theater off I-435 while there is construction work on Renner Road.
