Man pleads guilty to second-degree murder

Christopher Stewart, Kansas City, Kan., pleaded guilty today to second-degree murder and eluding a police officer in connection with the Feb. 17, 2014, death of Graciela Olivas.

The death happened at the intersection of 34th and Shawnee Drive, Kansas City, Kan., when a car driven by Stewart collided with a car driven by Olivas. Stewart was fleeing from police at the time, according to authorities. Olivas died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.

Sentencing has been set for 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, in Division 8 of the Wyandotte County District Court.

BPU to meet July 16

The Board of Public Utilities will meet July 16 at the board offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

The work session will begin at 4:30 p.m.

On the agenda for the work session is a general manager update and board update; and a downtown master plan discussion.

The regular meeting starts at 6 p.m.

On the agenda are a visitors’ time; linemen certificates; Western Fuels resolutions; Partnership for Safe Drinking Water Five Year Director’s Award; board comments, general manager comments; and executive (closed) session.

Accident reported at I-635 near Parallel Parkway
