Night Out Against Crime to be Aug. 5

Night Out Against Crime will be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 18th and Ridge, Kansas City, Kan.

The guest speakers include Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller, former Kansas City, Kan., police chief; and Thomas Beall of the U.S. Attorney’s office in Kansas. Local elected officials also are expected to speak.

Children and adults may attend. A yo-yo demonstration and competition is planned. Community groups also are invited to the event. The first 100 who belong to a registered neighborhood group will receive a free T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded.

Those attending will also have the opportunity to meet with members of the local police and sheriff departments.

Aug. 1 deadline for KCKCC Jazz Band trip to Havana Jazzfest

Time is running out on community members wishing to join the Kansas City Kansas Community College Jazz Band at the 2014 Havana Jazzfest in Havana, Cuba.
A final organizational meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, at the Conference Center adjacent to the Campus Lake on the KCKCC campus at 7250 State Ave.
The final day to be a part of the entourage accompanying the Jazz Band is Friday, Aug. 1. Any persons signing up after Aug. 1 will be responsible for making their own travel arrangements.
Because of restrictions flying to and from Cuba, the KCKCC band will be flying through Dallas to Cancun, Mexico, on Tuesday, Dec. 16, where it will connect with a Cancun to Havana flight arriving in Havana at 5:25 p.m.
The return trip will depart Havana Monday, Dec. 22, and include a night’s stopover in Cancun before returning to Kansas City Tuesday, Dec. 23.

The price for the land tour in Cuba is $1,769 and includes hotel (double occupancy), some meals, daily activities with tour guides, buses, tours and an all-access pass to the Havana International Jazz Festival. However, it does not cover air fares, licensing fees and a $20 Cuba Tourist Visa. Also, all participants must have U.S. passports.

38th annual Wyandotte County Open golf tourney Aug. 9-10

The longest running tournament of its kind in the greater Kansas City area, the 38th annual Wyandotte County Open Golf Championship will be held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9-10, at Sunflower Hills.

Sponsored by Danny’s Bar and Grill in Piper Plaza at 109th and Parallel Parkway, the 36-hole stroke tournament will have six men’s flights and two ladies flights. The cost is $90 and includes one practice round to be played no later than Aug. 6 and two tournament rounds. Tee times will be available on Thursday, Aug. 7.

Kansas City’s longest putt contest will be held on the putting clock on Saturday. Closest to the hole prizes will be awarded on all four par 3 holes both days along with a long drive contest on No. 10. Closest to the hole on No. 16 on Saturday will win a $100 gift certificate to the Sunflower Hills pro shop while the closest on Sunday will win a foursome at Sunflower Hills via TeeQuest.com.

In addition to three rounds of golf, the $90 entry fee will include a tee package sponsored by Danny’s Bar and Grill, a hot dog lunch on Saturday provided by Farmland Foods and a Sunday dinner provided by the Sunflower Hills snack shop.
