Reardon to deliver keynote address


Former Kansas City, Kan., Mayor Joe Reardon is scheduled to deliver the keynote address today at the New York State Second Annual Broadband Summit and Awards Ceremony. Reardon, an attorney with McAnany, Van Cleave and Phillips, was mayor when Kansas City, Kan., was selected as the first Google Fiber city. He currently works to bring the ultra-high-speed Internet connectivity to other communities. His remarks today are expected to provide information about why the high-speed broadband will be critical for cities’ growth.

Accident reported on I-70

A 24-year-old Roeland Park, Kan., woman drifted onto the shoulder of I-70 and hit a parked car on June 3, according to a Kansas Turnpike Authority trooper’s report.

The accident happened about 8:55 p.m. June 3 on I-70 east of the I-435 exit in Wyandotte County.

The driver of the Kia Optima was injured and taken to a hospital.

The Dodge pickup on the side of the highway was unoccupied and was towed away.

Some customers without power in KCK

About 1,897 electric customers in Kansas City, Kan., were reported without electrical power about 11:15 a.m. June 5, according to the Board of Public Utilities’ power outage map.

More than 1,400 of the customers were located on the south side of Kansas City, Kan., near the Shawnee, Kan., border, according to the map.

High winds have moved through Wyandotte County, and the area’s severe thunderstorm warning was extended until 11:45 a.m.

Within an hour, the BPU reported that it had restored power to many customers, and there were 511 customers without power as of 12:10 p.m. The 1,400 customers on the south side were restored.
