KCK school board to meet June 10

The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at the Central Office, 2010 N. 59th St.

On the agenda are several items, including contracts with agencies for special education; a toilet addition to the north Central Office; elevator maintenance and repair; the purchase of online study guides for achievement tests; the sale of district surplus items such as kitchen equipment; contracts for alternative education services; and other items.

Vallejo named to dean’s list at Upper Iowa

Joleen Vallejo, an accounting major from Bonner Springs, Kan., was named to the Upper Iowa University 2013-14 Spring Dean’s List.

To be honored, the undergraduate must have earned a minimum 3.50 GPA for the semester and be enrolled as a full-time student. The university is in Fayette, Iowa.

Williams receives degree from Georgia Institute

Ronald Williams of Kansas City, Kan., has earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Williams was among approximately 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students who received degrees during Georgia Tech’s 247th commencement exercises.

Tisch graduates cum laude

Katerina Tisch of Bonner Springs graduated from the University of San Diego on May 25.

Tisch earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and real estate. Tisch graduated cum laude.

The University of San Diego is a Catholic institution of higher learning committed to teaching, the liberal arts, the formation of values and the creation of ethical leaders.

Up to 95 jobs to open at new Argentine Walmart market

The new Walmart Neighborhood Market in the Argentine area of Kansas City, Kan., will hire up to 95 associates, according to a news release.

The store plans to open in the summer. A temporary hiring center has opened at 2414 S. 34th St., Suites B and C, Kansas City, Kan.

According to store manager Deryk Cogdill, the store will be hiring both full- and part-time associates. “Walmart jobs are more than just simply ‘a job’—these jobs can lead to great career opportunities,” Cogdill said. “Walmart will work with you to help you excel. I started out as a cart pusher and now I’m managing a brand new Walmart Neighborhood Market.”

Walmart provides a benefits program to eligible full- and part-time associates. For example, it provides a variety of affordable health and well-being benefits including health-care coverage with no lifetime maximum. Walmart also offers eligible associates matching 401(k) contributions of up to 6 percent of pay, discounts on general merchandise, an Associate Stock Purchase Program and company-paid life insurance. Additionally, eligible associates receive a quarterly incentive based on store performance.

The majority of new associates will begin work in August to help prepare the store for its grand opening, a spokesman said.

Veterans must be within 12 months of active duty and meet Walmart’s standard hiring criteria, according to the spokesman.
