KU Hospital to open new rehab center Tuesday

The University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kan., is opening its new Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation facility on Tuesday, June 24.

The new facility is just west of the main campus on Rainbow Boulevard and 39th Street on the second level of a new four-story multi-use building.

The new rehabilitation center includes 29 private rooms, each with wheelchair-accessible showers, and will offer 27,800 square feet, more than double its current space.

The new location also features a large rehabilitation gym, therapeutic kitchen facilities, patient dining area, multipurpose room, staff break room, a family lounge and a transitional apartment for patients and their caregivers to practice independent living skills before going home. Although sites like WeRecover.com can be a great place to find the best rehab centre for your needs, services like this will be the best service generally.

Approximately 90 staff members from an interdisciplinary team of specialty-trained physicians, rehabilitation nurses, therapists, psychologists, social workers, and many others will take care of patients.

“There’s one proud beneficiary in everything we do at The University of Kansas Hospital, and that’s the patient,” said Bob Page, president and CEO. “A lot of us have had friends and family members who have been patients on the rehab unit and they’ve gotten outstanding care. Now that outstanding care will be provided in a world-class facility.”

Patients and visitors will enter through the first floor lobby, located on the west side of the building. The first floor also includes a restaurant and retail shops. A parking facility is available directly across from the front door.

KCKCC honors students organizing collecting effort for homeless

by Kelly Rogge

The Honors Tutorial III Service Learning class and Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Kansas City Kansas Community College are working this summer to make Keep Cool Care summer care packages for the homeless.

“A group of students in the spring had researched and put together a presentation on protecting yourself during inclement weather,” said Renee Gregory, an adjunct faculty member for the Honors Education program. “When we discussed our summer project, they decided it was a natural fit to what that had done in the spring.”

Each care package will include a refillable water bottle, keep cool bandanna and sunscreen as well as other things. There are two ways to get involved:

• Collection drive. The two groups are holding a sunscreen drive. Bottles of 4 oz., new-in-package sunscreen can be dropped off in the honors office, Flint Building Room 3600 on the KCKCC campus until July 7.

• Bake sale. There will be a bake sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, June 23, in the Deli area of Lower Jewell. Students have already signed up to bring Jell-O pie, a variety of cookies and cupcakes and other baked goodies.

The goal is to collect items for at least 100 Keep Cool Care packages that will then be distributed to the homeless in Kansas City, Kan.

“I just want for them to embrace how awesome it feels to give back. It would be really cool if this sparked a passion for service, which is what this class and Phi Theta Kappa are all about,” Gregory said. “This is the community that supports us, so I feel we need to give back. We want to show everyone how proud we are to be a part of the Kansas City, Kan., community.”

Rain cuts T-Bones loss short

Former T-Bones infielder Devin Goodwin homered as rain cut Laredo’s 6-2 win over Kansas City short Sunday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

The T-Bones took the early lead, however, just two batters into the game. Bryan Sabatella led off the Kansas City first with a walk, and came around to score on a double by Jonny Kaplan, who was signed by the club Saturday. Nick Schwaner singled later in the inning, scoring Kaplan and giving Kansas City an early 2-0 lead.

Leading 2-1, Kansas City starting pitcher Mike Nannini (0-2) worked his way around base runners in the third and fourth, but finally surrendered the lead in the fifth. Harrison Kain singled and Nick Van Stratten was hit by a pitch beginning the inning, setting the stage for a Goodwin three-run home run over the left field wall. Dennis Phipps followed two batters later with a homer of his own, extending the Laredo advantage to 5-2.

The Lemurs tacked on another run in the seventh. Van Stratten led off the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a poor throw by catcher Brian Erie. Goodwin then lifted a fly ball to centerfield, allowing Van Stratten to tag and score, pushing the Laredo advantage to 6-2.

Laredo starting pitcher Cesar Carrillo settled down considerably after a rocky first inning, allowing only three hits and no runs over the game’s next five innings. Caleb Graham tossed a scoreless seventh for the Lemurs before the clouds rolled in and the game entered a delay. After 30 minutes, the game was called and ruled final after seven innings of play. Carrillo (3-3) picked up his third win for Laredo.

With the loss, Kansas City falls to 17-19, while Laredo moves to 19-16. The T-Bones embark on a four-game road trip to Amarillo before returning home on June 27 to face off against the Gary SouthShore RailCats at 7:05. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618.
