Cotton earns undergraduate degree from Washington University

Jerell Cotton, son of Kelvin Burns and Renee Cotton of Kansas City, Kan., earned an undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis on May 16.

Cotton graduated with a bachelor of arts in Spanish and a minor in public health. Cotton graduated from Sumner Academy of Arts and Science in 2010.

Cotton was among the more than 2,800 students who received degrees at the university’s 153rd Commencement ceremony.

Zusi, Besler in World Cup match this morning

Two Sporting KC players, Graham Zusi and Matt Besler, are on the U.S. Men’s National Team today as the team takes on Germany in the World Cup at 11 a.m.

The U.S. team is trying for a win or a draw today so that it can get a berth in Round 16 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. If Germany wins, the U.S. team’s fate will depend on the outcome of the Portugal-Ghana game played at the same time.

The game is being played in Recife, Brazil. The game is on ESPN and Univision, WHB-AM 810, and on ESPN Radio. It is online at WatchESPN.

A watch party has been planned in the Kansas City Power and Light District in Kansas City, Mo. There is no admission charge. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

Wyandotte County area may get some rain this afternoon

Scattered thunderstorms may develop this afternoon, mainly after 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

While some storms in the region may be capable of producing small hail and lightning, severe weather is not expected, the weather service stated.

Today’s high will be 89, and skies will be mostly sunny. The chance of precipitation is 30 percent. The wind is predicted to be 6 to 10 mph.

Thunderstorm chances will continue into the weekend and into the beginning of next week, according to the weather service.

There is a potential for storms to be severe on Saturday in the region, with the main concerns large hail and damaging winds.
