Youth Entrepreneurs hold Final Flyers celebration

Youth Entrepreneurs will hold the final round of its annual business competition and recognition celebration on Thursday, May 29, in Wichita, Kan.

A total of 16 students from Greater Kansas City, southwest Kansas and Wichita will compete.

Before the finals, students wrote business plans, presented them and competed at the classroom and regional levels.

Regional winners received up to $1,000 that can be used for higher education or business capital.

Students competing for the top prize of $2,500 in capital funds include these from Wyandotte County: Rachel Rocha, Bishop Ward High School; and Josh Stramel, Washington High School.

Applications open for KCKCC Endowment Association scholarships

Looking for a way to pay for your college education? There is still time to apply for a scholarship provided by the Kansas City Kansas Community College Endowment Association.

The Endowment Association awards scholarships to KCKCC students annually ranging from $250 to full-ride scholarships. These funds can be used for paying tuition or purchasing textbooks and are awarded based on academic qualifications as well as other scholarship criteria.

Scholarships offered by the Endowment Association include:
• Frank and Doris Schlagle Scholarship – Up to $1,500 per semester and covers tuition, fees and required textbooks for six to 15 credit hours per semester. It is renewable as long as a student maintains at least a 3.25 grade point average and completes all courses taken. Preference is given to those who live in Wyandotte and Leavenworth. Applicants must be pursuing an associate degree or certificate from KCKCC.
• Frank and Doris Schlagle Scholarship Tier 2 – The scholarship covers tuition and fees only for six to 15 credit hours per semester. It is renewable if a student maintains at least a 3.0 GPA and completes all courses taken.
• Assurant Employee Benefits Scholarship for Students with Disabilities – $500 per semester and students must be physically, intellectually or learning disability to be eligible.
• Ed and Ione Trapp Veterinary Scholarship – $500 per semester and must be a declared pre-veterinary medicine major. Applicants must also be residents of Wyandotte or Leavenworth County.
• Etta Blanche Smith Dahlgren Scholarship – up to $1,000 per semester and applicants must be an elementary education major.
• Gingrich Family Scholarship – students must be a single parent majoring in the Allied Health program to be eligible. Amount will be determined by the family.
• John Stocksen Memorial Scholarship – business majors are eligible and amount will be determined by family.
• Thomas and Teresa Sullivan Scholarship – up to $1,000 per semester and computer information systems or mathematics majors are eligible.
• William Nelson Nicoll Jr. Scholarship – $500 per semester.
• Wyandotte County Association of Retired School Personnel – up to $1,000 per semester. Second year education majors are eligible.
• Wyandotte High School Class of ’55 – Applicants must be graduates of Wyandotte High School. It is renewable for up to three semesters.
• Rita M. Ahart Nursing Scholarship – $500 to $1,000 per semester. Applicants must be a seeking a degree in the KCKCC nursing program and be a Wyandotte County resident. Amount of award to be determined by the Ahart family.

Students applying for most scholarships, other than the Frank and Doris Schlagle Scholarship, must have at least a 3.0 GPA or meet GED test scores that have been established. If applying for one of the Frank and Doris Schlagle Scholarship, students must have at least a 3.25 GPA to qualify.

To apply, a one page essay detailing degree/career plans and a transcript must be submitted with completed scholarship application. The deadline is June 1.

Fans can vote for soccer all-stars online through July 11

Major League Soccer unveiled the fan ballot this week for the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game featuring eight representatives from each of the 19 clubs as voted on by media.

Sporting Kansas City’s nominees eligible for selection:

GK Eric Kronberg – Best goals against average (1.00) among goalkeepers with a minimum of five games played and leads all MLS goalkeepers with five shutouts
DEF Matt Besler – Two-time All-Star (2011, 2013) became team captain and earned a spot on the U.S. Men’s National Team roster for the 2014 World Cup
DEF Aurelien Collin – Two-time MLS All-Star (2012, 2013) leads MLS defenders with two goals and anchors the second best defensive team in MLS
DEF Seth Sinovic – Leawood, Kansas native has contributed to five shutouts, most of any player this season, and leads all Sporting KC defenders in minutes played
MF Benny Feilhaber – In MLS, Feilhaber is 2nd in fouls suffered (37), 3rd in duels won (95) and 6th in successful passes (647); 2nd on team in assists (3)
MF Oriol Rosell – Broke MLS records, kept by Opta since 2011, for successful passes (160) and touches (174) in a match in 3-0 win at Montreal
MF Graham Zusi – Two-time MLS All-Star (2012, 2013) leads team with four assists and has recorded the second most successful crosses/corners in MLS (30)
FWD Dom Dwyer – Second in MLS with 10 goals and 46 shots while ranking first among all players in game-winning goals (3) and multi-goal games (3)

Fan voting is available online at MLSsoccer.com now through July 11. Additionally, votes will be tallied via Twitter from July 2-6. Eleven players – one goalkeeper, three defenders, four midfielders and three forwards – with the highest combined votes will be named to the All-Star Fan XI.

The 11th player – a forward – will be determined by the AT&T/EA SPORTS “More than a Vote” Challenge. Fans have the opportunity to vote one forward into the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game by scoring goals in EA SPORTS FIFA 14 on the Xbox One, PlayStation®4, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. The forward with the most votes – one goal equals one vote – on July 11 will occupy the final forward spot on the All-Star Fan XI.

The 2014 MLS All-Star Game will be held Aug. 6 in Portland, Ore., featuring the MLS All-Stars against Germany’s Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. The marquee match will air live on ESPN2 and UniMas from Providence Park.

A total of 32 All-Stars are named each year, per the collective bargaining agreement. Media, fans, players, the All-Star coach and MLS Commissioner Don Garber all contribute in the All-Star selection process.
