Sporting drops match to Dallas, 2-0

Sporting Kansas City’s two-game winning streaked was snapped in a 2-0 defeat to FC Dallas on Saturday night at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.

In a Western Conference battle contested amid sweltering conditions with temperatures in the mid-90s, FC Dallas (9-8-5, 32 points) jumped to 6th place in the provisional standings while dropping Sporting (6-8-7, 25 points) five points below the playoff line.

The visitors struck on either side of halftime through their leading scorers, surging ahead on a 37th-minute Dominique Badji goal before 18-year-old Jesus Ferreira doubled the cushion on 57 minutes.

Sporting totaled 18 shot attempts of their own, but just two tested Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez as manager Peter Vermes’ men incurred their fourth home loss of the 2019 regular season.

An opportunity for Sporting to bounce back will arise Friday when the club visits New York City FC (7-3-9, 30 points) at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. with live coverage on FOX Sports Kansas City Plus, FOX Sports Midwest Plus and FOX Sports GO.

The hosts threatened near the half-hour mark when Graham Zusi whipped a teasing free kick into a crowded penalty area, but Seth Sinovic’s snap header skipped wide of the target.

Dallas capitalized on a costly Sporting giveaway shortly thereafter, as Michael Barrios intercepted a stray back pass and squared low for Badji.

The Dallas forward slotted past goalkeeper Tim Melia for his sixth goal of 2019, a team-best total that Ferreira tied 20 minutes later.

Dallas’ second tally stemmed from a Santiago Mosquera cross. Ferreira chested the ball to his feet at the top of the box, eluded a pair of Sporting defenders and finished into the corner to put his side comfortably ahead.

Sporting received an injection of energy in the 65th minute when influential midfielder Roger Espinoza entered as a second-half substitute for his first competitive action since April 14, having missed the last three months with a knee injury.

Less than a minute after his introduction, Zusi’s delectable service to the far post was headed just wide and into the side netting by Sinovic.

Forwards Daniel Salloi and Krisztian Nemeth entered as late-game substitutes and both threatened to put Sporting on the scoresheet, but Salloi’s drive was blocked behind for a corner kick and Nemeth’s bending effort was palmed over the bar by outstretched goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez.

T-Bones blown out by Goldeyes

A disastrous first inning buried the Kansas City T-Bones early, and they were not able to recover as they fell, 13-2, to the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Saturday night at JustBats Field at T-Bones Stadium in front of 4024 fans on First Responders Night.

The T-Bones’ (30-28) slumping bats were automatically put in a tough position when Winnipeg tagged Kansas City starter Kenny Koplove (2-3) for six runs in the top of the first inning.

Tyler Hill led off with a double and moved to third on an infield single by Wes Darvill. Kyle Martin then doubled in both Hill and Darvill. Willy Garcia followed up with a single and came around to score, along with Martin, on a three-run home run by Dominic Ficociello. The inning concluded with a solo shot from Reggie Abercrombie, and the Goldeyes (32-26) were up 7-0.

Winnipeg continued to pile on the runs in the fifth inning on a pair of solo shots by Martin and Ficociello off of Koplove, to put Kansas City down, 7-0.

In the top of the sixth inning, Tyler Hill started off the inning, reaching base on an error. Darvill then singled, and both Hill and Darvill came around to score on a single by Willy Garcia.

The Goldeyes put up another two-spot off of reliever Kevin Hamann in the top of the seventh inning when Alex Perez singled, Kevin Garcia doubled, and Tyler Hill brought both runners home with a double to make it a 13-0 ballgame.

The T-Bones’ offense was able to get some runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Three straight singles by Daniel Nava, Mason Davis, and Ramsey Romano off of Winnipeg starter Mitchell Lambson (7-2) brought Danny Mars to the plate with the bases loaded. Romano brought home Nava and Davis with a single and decreased the deficit, 13-2.

The deficit proved to be too much for the T-Bones to overcome, and they lost the second game of the series to the Goldeyes.

The Kansas City T-Bones and the Winnipeg Goldeyes will play the final game of the series on Sunday, July 21, with a first pitch time of 1:05 p.m. Hear all the action on the T-Bones Broadcast Network, http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/, with a first pitch of 1:05 p.m.
